When it comes to estate planning, there are no do-overs. The documents you create today—your Living Trust, Will, Powers of Attorney, and related instruments—will one day direct how your assets are distributed, how your loved ones are cared for, and how your wishes are carried out when you are no longer able to speak for yourself. With something so important, it’s critical to work with an attorney who is not only experienced but also recognized by the State Bar of California as a Certified Specialist in Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law.
What Is a Certified Specialist?
The State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization grants the “Certified Specialist” designation only to attorneys who have demonstrated a high level of expertise in a specific area of law. To become certified in Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law, an attorney must:
- Pass a rigorous written examination in the specialty field,
- Practice in the specialty area for a significant period of time,
- Demonstrate substantial involvement and proficiency through a required number of matters handled,
- Complete continuing education far beyond what is required for general licensure,
- Be favorably evaluated by judges and other attorneys familiar with their work.
While fewer than 3% of attorneys in California are Certified Specialists across all fields of law, the number who are certified specifically in Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law is less than one-half of one percent. It’s a credential that signals rare expertise and a deep commitment to this highly technical and sensitive area of practice.

Why It Matters for Your Estate Plan
Working with a Certified Specialist gives you confidence that your estate plan will be thorough, legally sound, and tailored specifically to your situation. Here are just a few reasons why that matters:
- Customized Planning: No two families are the same. A Certified Specialist understands the complexities that can arise with blended families, special needs beneficiaries, real estate holdings, business interests, and unique tax considerations. Your plan isn’t pulled from a template—it’s carefully crafted based on your goals.
- Avoiding Future Problems: Errors or vague language in estate planning documents can lead to confusion, disputes, delays in probate, and even litigation. Certified Specialists have the training to anticipate and address issues that others may miss, saving your loved ones unnecessary stress and expense down the road.
- Up-to-Date Legal Knowledge: Estate planning laws are constantly evolving. A Certified Specialist is required to stay current on legal developments and tax law, ensuring that your documents reflect the most recent and relevant statutes and strategies.
- Comprehensive Solutions: At Botti & Morison, our work doesn’t stop at preparing documents. We help ensure that your assets are properly titled and that your estate plan integrates with your broader financial picture. We also take the time to educate our clients, so you understand not just what we’re doing, but why.
