The primary goal of a GRAT is to bypass gift and estate taxes on appreciable assets. By funding the trust with assets that grow beyond the IRS-set 7520 rate, any excess appreciation can be transferred to beneficiaries tax-free. During the trust term, annuity payments are returned to the grantor, and anything beyond the hurdle rate goes to beneficiaries without estate inclusion or gift tax liability.
